Are we really progressing ?
Thursday, May 1st, 2008I read almost daily in newspapers, magazines or watch on TV that India is progressing at this rate etc etc…describing things in some financial language that is away from the understanding of a common man like me. I was just thinking about this so called progress and thought about writing it here. Some of the common things i see, observe or read about almost daily, in no order are:
- First page of the newspaper is full of news of murder, robbery and rape.
- Daily there are some girls being killed due to dowry.
- People have become so heartless. Nobody cares about what is happening around.
- Let there be an accident on the road. I don’t think there will be someone coming forward to help. Recently a man died in Delhi after he met with an accident and nobody came to help him.
- From top to bottom, each and every system is becoming (”has become” in fact) corrupt.
- Nobody wants to obey any traffic rules. Try to observe the scene on a red light. Bigger is the car more they mis-behave. That means more money and access to best things just snatches whatever little functionality of brain you have.
- How many people think about the thing called “my country” ?
- Can we just guess the degree of selfishness in us ? To what extent we can go for little of our advantage ?
- Where is that so called great Indian culture ?
- See politicians of this country. All of them are enjoying the luxury life ? Who, what the heck country ?
- Use a public transport and see the behaviour of people and driver/conductor ?
- See how many people are homeless and sleeping on the roads/footpath ?
Just few of the things which came to my mind in these 10 minutes. And then we say we are progressing ?
or creating multi story buildings means progress ? I guess no…
Punjab
Monday, January 7th, 2008One of my friend sent some paintings in a mail. Just reminded me of those golden old days. So thought about posting here.
A kite flying scene from a village where 3 kids are getting ready to fly their machine in the air. These ready made kites are today’s play. In those days kids used to make kites on their own, either from polythene bags or newspapers.

A young boy tie’ing his turban. See how he has adjusted the mirror

A typical scene from a school in a village of Punjab. These days teachers don’t give these kind of punishments. But I have seen this happening when I did my 10th [In 1998]

Kids playing gulli-danda, one of the most played games of those times. Generally in summer vacations kids used to play this for hours, even in the noon when sun was on the top. Then Moms will go out and bring the kids back home and ask them to sleep.
Amin Malik
Friday, November 2nd, 2007I have been a big fan of Amin Malik and his writings since the days when I started reading Punjabi newspapers which generally use to carry his writings. I always felt that he translates emotions into words and his writings can make you cry. From whatever little I know about him I also seem to carry a dim expression in my mind that some people also have some issues with him because he writes, says and speaks nothing but “truth” which seems to be creating trouble.
From all of his writings, and same for his wife Rani Malik also, I am reminded of those old days of Punjab and Punjbiat which seem to be lost somewhere or taken some other form, under the shadow of changing times, modernization and globalisation.
I searched a lot for his books (& I don’t even know, he has written any books or not ? because nowhere I could find any information about him or his work) but hit no success. Also with the passage of time, the schedule of life, a separation got created between me and all those newspapers. These days because of online editions of newspapers, I hit upon an article written by Amin Malik, in Rozana Spokesman. As always its beautiful and I felt so nice after reading him after so long. Then I did some Googling and also found 2 videos oh him and his wife Rani Malik. Just sharing with you. Hope you love it. If anybody reading this blog knows anything more about Amin Malik, his email address, please do let me know
