Little Things Doth Crabby Make Part I. Enterprise Linux 5/RHEL5 Output Format Change for the iostat Command

Yes, I admit, sometimes little things make me crabby. Or is it that being crabby makes me easily irritated at small things? I think it’s the former rather than the latter.
Angry Email Makes Me Crabby
I am surprised at how many emails I’ve received from angry Storage Administrators about my position against Fibre Channel. I generally […]

Yet Another Sad Song, Afwah….

I guess you must be thinking that I always listen to sad songs only. Well that’s not entirely true. Mind it, I didn’t say that its “false” but its not completely true too. I listen only what is more closer to my heart, which is more closer to what really happens and the music, lyrics represent […]

Not In A Good Mood….

Well actually I am just burning with anger at the moment. Why so? There are not one but many reasons and the biggest one is the fate. Some times, when you need some thing so desperately, that is not given to you. But when you need it least or you think some thing more better […]

A spanish evening with Steven Feuerstein

Yesterday I had organized a little dinner with Steven Feuerstein, my former collegue Christoph Burandt and his lovely wife Silvia as well as my dear friend Jenny.
Steven had delivered a two day seminar for Oracle University in Munich. Although he was very sick in the last days, he had caught  a chest cold and swollowed […]

Create virtual switch on HP-UX Integrity sever

How to create virtual switch on HP-UX Integrity sever:

On Itanium server running HP-UX 11i v2 if you have Integrity VM software installed then you can create and run virtual machines to run HP-UX. Most important step while you are planning to run HP-UX on guest virtual machine is to plan and create virtual switches. It’s is best to use the separate lan card to run the virtual machines so you can have better manage network traffic between HP-UX host and HP-UX guest operating system. For example if you are planning to create two virtual machines (VM’s) on the Integrity Itanium HP-UX machine then make sure you use individual network card’s for each VM.

Scan for the lan card and connect the network cable for individual network cards. Let ’s say you are planning to create two virtual switch , each one dedicated to each virtual machines you should select two network cards and connect the network cable into these lan cards :

hpuxVMhost# ioscan –fnC lan

Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description

===================================================================

lan 0 0/2/1/0 iether CLAIMED INTERFACE HP A7012-60601 PCI/PCI-X 1000Base-T Dual-port Adapter

lan 1 0/2/1/1 iether CLAIMED INTERFACE HP A7012-60601 PCI/PCI-X 1000Base-T Dual-port Adapter

lan 2 0/4/2/0 iether CLAIMED INTERFACE HP AB352-60003 PCI/PCI-X 1000Base-T Dual-port Core

lan 3 0/4/2/1 iether CLAIMED INTERFACE HP AB352-60003 PCI/PCI-X 1000Base-T Dual-port Core

lan 4 0/5/1/0 iether CLAIMED INTERFACE HP A7012-60601 PCI/PCI-X 1000Base-T Dual-port Adapter

lan 5 0/5/1/1 iether CLAIMED INTERFACE HP A7012-60601 PCI/PCI-X 1000Base-T Dual-port Adapter

On this Itanium Integrity HP-UX host server where i am going to install and run HP-UX virtual machines (VM’s), I have six nic cards and I have select lan 4 and lan 5 to create the virtual switch.

Steps to create the virtual switch on Integrity HP-UX server:

1. Creating Virtual switch on HP-UX integrity VM host server:

To create virtual switch on Integrity HP-UX server you have to use the hpvmnet command:

hpuxVMhost # hpvmnet -c -S vswitch1 –n 4

hpuxVMhost # hpvmnet -c -S vswitch2 –n 5

This command will create the virtual switch name vswitc0 attached to lan (network ) interface card 4 where c option is used to tell the hpvmnet command to create the switch and –S is thename of virtual switch to be created and –n is used for the attached lan card.

2. Check the status of the virtual switch:

root@hpuxVMhost:/> hpvmnet

Name Number State Mode NamePPA MAC Address IP Address

======== ====== ======= ========= ======== ============== ===============

localnet 1 Up Shared N/A N/A

vswitch2 5 down Shared lan5 0×001a4b07a12d 192.168.0.10

vswitch1 7 down Shared lan4 0×001a4b07a12c 192.168.0.11

3. Start (turn on ) the newly created virtual switch, as listed on above command the state is displayed as down for the two new switches:

hpuxVMhost # hpvmnet -b -S vswitch0 –n 4

hpuxVMhost # hpvmnet -b -S vswitch0 –n 5

Taking a Look at ApEx 3.1 Interactive Reports

The latest copy of Oracle Magazine dropped through the door yesterday, and as I was looking through it last night I noticed an article on the new Interactive Reporting feature in ApEx 3.1. Ever on the lookout for new BI and reporting technologies, I downloaded the Apex 3.1 installer from OTN, copied it onto my […]

2:30am will never happen on Sunday morning

For those that didn’t bother to install the OS, Oracle or other DST patches (to handle the adjusted DST change schedule) last year and elected to just change the time on your servers by hand twice a year, get ready to do that again this weekend. Personally, I’d rather burn two whole regular work days […]
